Johnson Hardware Introduces All-Steel Split Studs for Pocket Door Frame

Johnson Hardware 1500SC Series All Steel Split Studs Pocket Door Frame Kit three versions

Sliding and folding hardware manufacturer Johnson Hardware has announced all-steel split stud system for its 1500SC Series pocket door frame.

Previously made as steel-wrapped wood studs, the new galvanized all-steel split studs resist warping and rust, the manufacturer says. When used with the 151558PL pocket wall reinforcement clip set and 5/8-inch thick plywood, the walls become significantly stronger and are more resistant to flexing or bowing in or out.

“The changes to the 1500SC make the frame more versatile, too,” the company says. “The 2x4 construction frame no longer requires the 1575 adaptor kit for 1¾-inch thick doors. With narrower studs, the frame allows an additional ¼-inch pocket clearance. The new all-steel studs allow for a larger 2¼-inch-wide pocket, without sacrificing quality.”

Pocket doors are popular items for architects and builders working on homes with tight spaces and are often common features found in old urban homes. Johnson Hardware says a pocket door can free up to 14 square feet of floor space otherwise lost to a traditional swing door. “It creates privacy between rooms and easier entryways,” the company says. “A pocket door can increase accessibility in the busiest rooms, from the kitchen to the mudroom. It can save precious floor space around a closet or in a bathroom.”

Loaded with features, the 1500SC pocket door frame comes equipped with a soft-close/soft-open feature that allows doors up to 200 pounds to be closed with the touch of a fingertip, so there’s less risk of pinched fingers and slamming, the company says. The frame also comes with self-tapping screws that will work for both drywall and finish trim.

Additionally, it uses a “jump-proof” aluminum box track and trouble-free hangers with 1-inch wheels on convex rails. Johnson says the system is ideal for 1- to 1¾-inch-thick doors measuring up to 60 inches wide by 108 inches tall. It also works well with 4-inch steel studded walls when used with the company's new Stud Wall Adaptor Kit.

Johnson says the all-steel split studs can be installed fast and easy in the field, and are available in the following Johnson Hardware Series pocket doorframes: 2060, 2000, 1560 and 1562.
